Government has placed at least 221 persons under surveillance in Zimbabwe for possible infection with the coronavirus that has ravaged China and other parts of the world.
The contagious disease which was initially discovered in the 1960’s and has now claimed hundreds of lives in China.
Briefing the media at a post cabinet meeting, Information minister, Monica Mutsvangwa said Zimbabwe was on high alert of the outbreak which has so far been confirmed in Botswana.
“Minister (Obadiah Moyo) also indicated that there is currently no vaccine against the virus, and emphasized the need for personal, family and community hygiene. The Minister also indicated that there are no confirmed cases of coronavirus infection so far in Zimbabwe, although 221 persons are currently under surveillance for possible infection,” Mutsvangwa said.
Moyo, according to Mutsvangwa, told cabinet that a Public Emergency Operations Unit is being set up as a National Command Centre at Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals Coordination will include airports and other ports of entry.
“Rapid response units will also be set up in all provinces and at all border posts. Further updates will be made available in order to safeguard the nation at all times,” the minister said.
