Harare – President Emmerson Mnangagwa has left Zimbabwe on the eve of Valentine’s Day, leaving behind First Lady Auxillia Mnangagwa as he heads to Ethiopia for the 38th Ordinary Session of the African Union (AU) Summit.
The summit, set to take place in Addis Ababa, will see Angolan President João Manuel Lourenço assume the AU chairmanship from Mauritania.
In Mnangagwa’s absence, Vice President Kembo Mohadi will serve as acting president.
His departure comes when the ruling ZANU-PF party is grappling with internal divisions.
One faction is pushing for an extension of Mnangagwa’s term, while another, reportedly led by War Veteran Blessed Geza, is calling for his resignation.
The political tensions add to an already charged atmosphere within the party, as Zimbabweans watch closely to see how the leadership battle unfolds.
