Harare- The Election Resource Centre Africa (ERC) has called on Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa to adhere to the constitutional term limits and complete his current term, which is set to end in 2028.
This appeal is made in the interest of ensuring a peaceful and orderly transition of power.
In a press release to commemorate Heroes Day, the ERC emphasized the importance of respecting the constitutional provisions regarding presidential terms.
‘As we commemorate this year’s Heroes Day, we commend and encourage the President of Zimbabwe, His Excellency, President E.D. Mnangagwa to honour his public position and respect the Constitution of Zimbabwe with regards to his tenure in office, to ensure peaceful and constitutional transitions’ said the statement
The ERC’s statement comes when there is growing momentum within the ruling Zanu PF party advocating for Mnangagwa to seek a third term.
Recent endorsements from more than six provincial leaders within the party have called for extending Mnangagwa’s presidency beyond his current term.
Despite using the ‘2030 ndinenge ndichipo’ mantra Mnangagwa has publicly stated that he intends to complete his current term and then retire.
He has committed to guiding his party through a congress to choose a successor, aiming for a smooth leadership transition
‘I did my first five years, so I am serving my last five years, which I will complete soon and will go and to rest’’
‘ We will go to Congress and look for someone to succeed me. My days to rest are close we will go to Congress and choose the one who will follow in my footsteps’ said Mnangagwa
It has not been clear from the party corridors as to who will take over from Mnangagwa, but they are pushing for a third term
