HARARE – (FinX) – The Ministry of Public Service , Labour and Social Welfare has set the minimum wage for all employees at the equivalent of US$100 except for agriculture and domestic employees.

According to Statutory Instrument 81 of 2020 the Minister of Labour set the minimum wage at $2 594.74, which is equivalent to US$103 at the fixed exchange rate of $25.

The legal instrument allows for exemptions if an employer applies to the appropriate National Employment Council or directly to the Ministry if not registered by any employment council, stating why the application should be considered.

Provisions are being made for domestics and agriculture workers.

The latest Poverty Datum Line for a family of five currently stands at just above $5 000 while the Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions had called for a minimum for general workers of $3 800 noting that wages for working people in the country had failed to keep pace with inflationary trends.
