Seedco has handed over US$9 060 to Idawekwako Old People’s Home and Mutemwa Leprosy centre, reinforcing its commitment to corporate social responsibility and supporting vulnerable communities in need.

This generous donation follows the successful completion of the company’s annual golf tournament, held in October 2024, which served as part of its corporate social responsibility initiatives. The event was conducted under a theme the home of bumper harrvest that reflects the company’s dedication to giving back to society, although the specific theme was not mentioned.

The funds raised during the golf tournament were matched by the company, thereby increasing the total donation amount. As a result, both Idawekwako Old People’s Home and Muchemwa Leprosy Home each received US$4 530.

In an interview, Aquinamary Guri, the administrator of Mutemwa Leprosy Centre, said that the funds would be used to further develop the center. Given the ongoing power challenges in the country, a significant portion of the funds will be allocated towards building a solar power plant to ensure a reliable backup power supply for the hospital.

“We have faced a severe power shortage over the past, so we are going to invest in a solar system that will power our in-house hospital and several homes,” said Guri. She added that the solar project is an ongoing initiative aimed at providing a sustainable energy solution for the entire center.

In the previous year, both homes received a combined donation of US$10 thousand. Muchemwa Leprosy Care Centre used its share of the funds to install a solar system, which has significantly aided their daily operations. Similarly, Idawekwako Old People’s Home utilized the funds to construct additional rooms, providing more accommodation for their residents.

Patience Phiri, Seedco’s Public Relations Officer, highlighted the company’s longstanding commitment to community support. “Seedco has been in the business of excellence for the past 85 years, and our success has been largely contributed to by the communities that support us,” said Phiri. “Therefore, we have taken it upon ourselves to assist people in need, including old people’s homes.”

Muchemwa Leprosy Centre currently supports 27 beneficiaries, while Idawekwako Old People’s Home has 16 beneficiaries. The ongoing support from Seedco ensures that both institutions can continue providing essential services and improving the lives of their residents.

Seedco, which operates in 19 African countries, underscores that “doing good is good business.” The company remains dedicated to serving the communities in which they operate. To further engage its customers, Seedco is currently running a promotion where customers can buy a 10 kg bag of seed along with another Seedco product, with attractive prizes to be awarded at harvest time.
